Google is a battery-killer. Can it get rid of its stigma?

Google is eager to upgrade performance of applications that consume less batteries. The move is seen as a response to criticism that Google's major apps are eating up batteries. As Google's flagship web browser Chrome is starting to make improvements in earnest, attention is being paid to whether it will shed its stigma as a "battery killer."\

Google is testing Chrome to apply the Battery-Savings Meta Tag feature. Battery-saving meta-tags work by slowing the frame speed or script execution speed so that video streaming or videoconferencing websites do not consume a lot of resources. This minimizes CPU resource consumption and maintains battery life.

Google is expected to operate on Chrome by recommending battery-saving meta-tags. In other words, when entering a website that causes battery consumption, it is asked to turn on CPU and battery consumption optimization functions. Google wants to test its features in Chrome 86 and 87 versions.

Google's move came a month after it announced improvements in its function to increase battery life by up to two hours. Google came up with a way to prevent power consumption by shutting down JavaScript timers and various tractors on the actual unused tab screen so as not to consume too much battery when multiple tabs were opened last month.

When 36 background tabs and 1 blank tab were opened at Chrome 86, experiments have confirmed that it can maintain battery life for more than 2 hours than Chrome without battery improvement. Google has also decided to have the ability to maintain battery performance by blocking advertisements that consume a lot of device resources.

Attention is focusing on whether Google's move will remove the stigma of Google's major apps so far. Google's various apps are known for their high battery consumption on devices such as laptops and smartphones. According to a survey by Uswitch, a website that compares prices in various fields such as energy, personal assets, and insurance, Google Chrome ranks eighth in the worst app that consumes a lot of batteries. Chrome consumes the most batteries for web browsers in this ranking, which compares battery consumption in various categories such as Wi-Fi connectivity, location, and storage. For your information, Google App is ranked first in the overall ranking, while Facebook App is ranked second.

In addition, when Apple and Microsoft promoted their Web browsers such as Safari and Edge by saying that they consume less battery than Chrome, the pressure on them seems to have contributed to Google's improvement of Chrome.
